Process
One day in science class, we were learning about how from an evolutionary standpoint, it was useful to be a carrier of the sickle cell gene. This mutated half of the gene warped the blood cell proteins so the plasmodium parasite could not get in. This same gene, also caused a debilitating disease from which most infants do not survive from. This got us thinking - how could we prevent malaria in the first place so that over time, the people with sickle cell would go down as well. From our research, we found that the best way to prevent getting malaria was to prevent getting mosquito bites. The best way of preventing mosquito bites was the use of bed nets. Yet in the populations most susceptible to malaria bed net use was not widespread with limited availability and below poverty line wages cited as reasons. Equipped with research, we decided to use it to change someone's life. 2-5 times a week we met in Mrs. Shannon Dziwanowski's room to research and come up with a plan. We decided to raise money for the foundation Nothing But Nets so we could provide bed nets to those in need. To raise money we decided to raise money Penny Wars style but we needed Principal Duda's approval. We presented our proposal and not only did he say it was great idea but gave our first donation of $500. We also called the organizations operations on the ground which explained to us how they would get the nets to families and how they would be trained to use them which gave us a cleared picture on how the money was going to be used to help impoverished people. We made video announcements to the spread the word and watched over donations. It was a great success with our group raising over a 1560 dollars over the course of two weeks or about 215 bed nets worth. This was then donated to Nothing but Nets who sent us a care package and we received T-shirts and pins from the UN and were in the school newspaper as recognition.
